A square that contains the circle (precisely or imprecisely) is an easy way to do this. Great-circle calculations tend to run slowly and make the machine’s CPU utilization skyrocket.īefore applying the great-circle formula, pare down your records to a small subset of the total, and trim the resulting set to a precise circle. The problem with this technique is that the formula requires a lot of trigonometric operations, which are very CPU-intensive. The first tool in many programmers’ toolbox is the great-circle (Haversine) formula for computing distance along the surface of a sphere. 4: Filter results by cheapest firstĪ great way to optimize MySQL is to do cheap, imprecise work first, then the hard, precise work on the smaller, resulting set of data.įor example, suppose you’re looking for something within a given radius of a geographical point. Both add latency to the application and load to MySQL. Queues cause problems for two major reasons: They serialize your workload, preventing tasks from being done in parallel, and they often result in a table that contains work in process as well as historical data from jobs that were processed long ago. Marking emails as unsent, sending them, then marking them as sent is a common example. For example, if you set the status of an item so that a particular worker process can claim it before acting on it, then you’re unwittingly creating a queue. Queues and queue-like access patterns can sneak into your application without your knowing it. This knowledge can help solve problems quickly. When it comes to troubleshooting, check the performance and utilization of all four resources, with a careful eye toward determining whether they are performing poorly or are simply being asked to do too much work. In most cases, MySQL will perform well with fast CPUs because each query runs in a single thread and can’t be parallelized across CPUs. ![]() This might seem counterintuitive, but in many cases disks are overutilized because there isn’t enough memory to hold the server’s working set of data.Īnother good example of this balance pertains to CPUs. In some cases, adding memory is a cheap way of increasing performance by orders of magnitude, especially on workloads that are disk-bound. ![]() Often, organizations will select servers with fast CPUs and disks but that are starved for memory. Just as important, balance them reasonably well against each other. When choosing hardware for MySQL, ensure good-performing components all around. Understanding the fundamental resources is important in two particular areas: choosing hardware and troubleshooting problems. If any of these is weak, erratic, or overloaded, then the database server is very likely to perform poorly. To function, a database server needs four fundamental resources: CPU, memory, disk, and network. 2: Understand the four fundamental resources Workload-profiling tools group similar queries together, allowing you to see the queries that are slow, as well as the queries that are fast but executed many times. ![]() These tools capture queries the server executes and return a table of tasks sorted by decreasing order of response time, instantly bubbling up the most expensive and time-consuming tasks to the top so that you can see where to focus your efforts. The best way to profile your workload is with a tool such as MySQL Enterprise Monitor’s query analyzer or the pt-query-digest from the Percona Toolkit. Here, time is the most important metric because when you issue a query against the server, you care very little about anything except how quickly it completes. By profiling your workload, you can expose the most expensive queries for further tuning. The best way to understand how your server spends its time is to profile the server’s workload. Here are 10 tips for getting great performance out of MySQL.

Benagil sea cave is a watery pantheon with sunlight streaming in through a hole in its domed ceiling. The sandstone cliffs of the western Algarve are dotted with secret caves and coves reached by rock-hewn steps and tunnels. There are adventure activities and studios or apartments as well as camping. Where to stay Salema Eco Camp is a beautiful, green campsite within walking distance of the beach and in the naturist-friendly zone. While da Santa and Figueira beaches are quite wild, Praia da Salema nearby has a lifeguard in the summer, plus cafes and a restaurant. History lovers can also seek out Fortaleza de Almádena, a yellow stone ruin facing the sea three miles east of Salema, with Arabic arches and a 17th-century chapel. Look for tracks in the stone left by dinosaurs 125 million years ago. About 10 minutes away are Praia da Santa and Praia da Figueira, beneath the ruins of an old fort. Walk west from Salema, along remote cliff paths, to a series of tiny wild coves. ![]() The far west the Algarve is part of the Alentejo natural park and perfect for secret cove hunters. There’s a bio-pool in the garden and fresh cheeses, milk, local fruit, hams and bread are left on the step for breakfast. Where to stay Five minutes’ drive from Amália beach, Cerro da Fontinha in Brejão has accommodation in old-style Alentejo cottages. Pick up the path from Azenhas do Mar and hike 3km over the wild coastal landscape with views inland to the Monchique mountains. The beach lies on the Rota Vicentina coast path, a 400km waymarked footpath which follows ancient smugglers’ routes and fishermen’s paths. Café Central is a great restaurant in Brejão for charcoal-grilled fish and octopus salad. Jagged black cliffs bookend this picture-perfect beach, named after 1940s rags-to-riches figure Amália Rodrigues, an orange-seller turned fado singer, who learned to swim here. A freshwater cascade tumbles on to the sandy cove, providing a natural shower. From the Herdade Amália guesthouse, near Azenha do Mar village, follow a path through thicket and down rough-hewn steps to Praia da Amália. Snagging a Divvy to just explore is pretty awesome. With the thicker tires and stout frame, it is a workhorse that is made to battle the imperfections that are found in Chicago’s roads. From testing the app with cars and motorcycles, I can say that it is ridiculously accurate. ![]() I used the iOS speedometer app FAST to figure out the top speed. I understand that they want to minimize risk, but at the same time I snag a bike to try to beat traffic. One of my complaints is the speed of the bikes though. Fortunately, this station worked spot on. I was dropped off, did my deeds and then pulled up my app to find the nearest Divvy station. ![]() The cab cost me about the same as a 24-hour Divvy pass, but hey at least it was reliable when I needed it. This set me back more minutes than I was looking to waste, so I flagged down a cab and headed out. I figured it was just a random fluke, so I went back and requested a new pin. There was one station that would not accept my code for the life of me. That is what is suppose to happen at least. The light turns green and you yank the bike out and pedal away. The 5-digit code is then typed into the key-pad of whatever bike you decide to be your chariot. If for some reason you get distracted and need a new code, just select the new code option, swipe your card, and poof new code. You essentially choose your language, swipe your card, enter some information, accept some terms and it will give you your first code to release a bike. The process is not terribly long, especially after the initial purchase. If I would have had a bike lock with me, I would have been able to make multiple stops very easily within the 30-minute period. If your destinations are close to each other, walking may be quicker than trying to Divvy it up to each one. Many times I would put the bike in a dock, walk a block or three to my destination, complete my task within a few minutes then have to walk back to the station to go through the entire process once again. I cannot help but think that if you are going to go the Divvy route, it would be handy to have a bike lock with you if you intend to make quick stops. It is not a terrible fee, but still a fee none the less. The catch you must dock the bike up at a station every 30-minutes, otherwise you are charged a surplus fee. If you need to cruise around a lot within a respectable radius, you can snag a Divvy bike for the entire day for the price of one cab. Divvy Review, From a Traveler’s Perspective: ![]() ![]() The number of hours kids spend on screens may actually be much higher than they estimated, with some teens spending up to 9 hours per day. Among those surveyed, 71% were parents, and they reported their children are usually on screens for an average of three hours per day. If adults who regularly observe a screen for long periods report having issues with their vision, it’s worth considering the impact of blue light on younger eyes. Being aware of this fact means parents should consider how screens affect kids’ eyes and develop healthy eye habits with them. ![]() The eyesight of future generationsīecause of the prevalence of technology in the modern household, kids have more access to screens than their parents’ generations. Some blue light exposure can be good for you under certain circumstances. Blue light is nearly impossible to avoid as a shorter wavelength of visible light, but it isn’t all bad either. Keep in mind, blue-light filtering glasses aren’t recommended as a cure-all for every eye ailment but as a tool to help relieve the harmful effects of blue light. Wearing these glasses had such positive effects on people’s health and wellness that 85% of wearers said blue-light glasses are a must for anyone who works from home, and 92% had recommended these glasses to someone they know. Protective lens users also reported experiencing a better quality of sleep compared to those who didn’t wear any form of blue-blocking lenses. More than 6 in 10 survey respondents reported using night mode/dark mode on their phones in addition to or in place of blue-light blocking glasses.Ī majority of remote workers (73%) used some form of blue-light blocking glasses/lenses, and of this group, 67% attributed having less eye strain to their use of blue-light glasses. Using blue-light filtering features on smart devices can also help to block these waves. Wearing blue-light blocking glasses can help substantially alleviate this problem.ĭepending on the lenses, blue-light glasses can block anywhere from 10% to nearly 100% of blue-violet waves. When our faces are almost constantly lit by device screens, it puts a lot of stress on our eyes. There are many variables involved when analyzing the effects of blue-light glasses, but scientific studies suggest there is more potential for help than harm when considering whether to wear them. Don’t use the devices immediately before bed.ĭo blue-light blocking glasses make a difference? Turn on night mode/ dark mode on your devices. Limit screen time by performing tasks that don’t involve screens. It helps ease eye strain and can also be an exercise in mindfulness to remain involved with your work. Practice the 20-20-20 rule, in which 20-second breaks are taken to observe an object at least 20 feet away for every 20 minutes of staring at a screen. It may seem counterproductive, but when you’re looking at a screen 24 inches away or closer for long periods, screen breaks are necessary and may help reduce eye fatigue. Take frequent breaks when spending long hours working at a computer or looking at screens. A few simple changes to how you work at home can lead to great benefits. But remote work doesn’t have to negatively affect your life if it’s the better option for you and your family. With improved technology and support for work from home initiatives on the rise, workers should consider how these changes affect the amount of time they spend staring at screens.Īccording to our survey results, working from home sometimes appears to be worse for workers’ health than working in an office. Studies have shown productivity increases when employees are allowed to work from their preferred home space. Many more employers are allowing people to work from home as they’ve found it’s a viable alternative to working in the office. Remote employees spend nearly 13 hours per day, on average, staring at screens.Ĥ3% of remote workers have left work early due to vision problems.Ĩ3% of those who used blue-light lenses reported good to excellent sleep compared to just 63% of non-blue-light lens users. Read on to learn more about the relationship between screen time and health among American workers today. To better outline the effects of increased screen time on the body, we surveyed 1,000 full-time employees, of which over 70% were parents. These life changes have led many people to wonder about the effects of prolonged blue-light exposure, as well as higher levels of screen time, especially how it may impact young Americans who’ve been exposed to screens much earlier than older generations. In addition to more adults working from home, many children have transitioned to an online school model following the pandemic. However, studies have shown going remote has also increased total numbers of hours worked. Working from home has its benefits, like eliminating the need for a commute and allowing for more freedom and downtime. |
